Art 1 Final Portfolio

1.) Project 3, the  style project, was my most successful work. I drew blue leaves on a black background for this project, which was in the style of the work of Pablo Picasso during his 'Blue Period'. I started with a brainstorm and thumbnails. When I had decided on all the details, I drew a couple of sketches, trying different colors and composition. For my final, I decided on a black background behind the blue leaves to create a contrast and make the leaves really stand out. I started by drawing the leaves in pencil. When that was finished, I colored in the leaves with colored pencil and used a black colored pencil for the background. If I were to do this project over again, one of the only changes I would make would be about the background. I would use acrylic paint for the black because it would create a different texture. Overall, I really like the  final product because of the emphasis on the leaves and the use of just enough color.

2.)  Project 1,  the realism project,  was the project that had the most obstacles for me. I drew my white pencil pouch on a table with a notebook. I wanted the emphasis to be on the pencil pouch, which is what I had so much trouble with. My obstacle was that I needed to make the pencil pouch stand out against the white background but I also wanted my pencil pouch to be white to make it as realistic as possible. I solved this issue by drawing a white pouch with pencil and adding a dark contour. On top of that, I added darker details, helping with the contrast. Another obstacle I came to was proportion. I needed to make my objects as realistic as I could and still make the the pencil pouch some what bigger, to put an emphasis on it. Taking risks with shading, proportion, and composition was worth it becasue it made me try new things. As an artist, trying new things makes you better because it helps you have more options on the world of art. Even the harder options will be open to you.

The letter 'L' in sign language

My hand for the final.

3.)  I decided to compare my final hand drawing to my hand drawing of the letter 'L' in sign language. Looking at the first drawing of the letter, I notice that I did not add as much detail as I could hand and I feel like I could have added more line variation as well. I would also add that the first hand looks more like a sketch, not something that you would use as a final product. My final hand has more details, showing that not only did I spend more time on it but it looks neater. I believe that the final drawing shows a growth as an artist because there is more realistic details on my final hand, including the line variation, the shadows, and the shading. I added a shadow the make it seem more realistic and it also helps fill up the page. I added shading throughout the hand not only on the contour. Another improvement is the size: I have been able to draw bigger objects than at the beginning of this class.

4.) The method of teaching that was used this year was a good experience for me. I really like being able to choose my topics and exactly what I wanted to do with my work. I feel that this method
made you be more creative because there was no limit. It also encouraged you to think about it more
because you needed to figure out a way, on you own, to make it work. You used sketches and
brainstorming to give you a better idea of the necessary steps in creating the work. I also like having no due dates because not everyone can finish a project at the same speed. It helped you take your
time on each and every project and not have to rush to finish it for a specific due date all the time. A con about not having a due date for some people is that they might slack off for a few days but at the same time it helped students take their own responsibilities in hand. Through this method of learning, I improved as an artist. For example, if you compare one of my first projects and sketches to some of a later time, there is a difference. Also, if you look at the drawing of the pumpkin below compares to the zentangle, you will notice that I have improved my shading skills because I can now much darker than before. Overall, this learning experience has taught me a lot.
